Double Klondike Solitaire – Double the Cards, Deeper Strategy

Double Klondike Solitaire uses two standard decks, totaling 104 cards distributed across 9 tableau columns, a stock and waste pile, and 8 foundation piles. The tableau columns are arranged in a cascading pattern where only the bottom card is face-up; consequently, revealing the 36 face-down cards is a crucial task from the very first moves.

On the tableau, you arrange cards in descending order with alternating colors. For example, a red 8 can be placed on a black 9, followed by a red 7. Once a valid sequence is formed, the entire group of cards can be moved to another column. If a column is completely cleared, only a King—or a sequence starting with a King—can fill the empty space.

Whenever the last face-up card is moved from a column, the face-down card beneath it is revealed. This is when the game dynamics shift significantly, as a newly revealed card can trigger a chain of new moves. Meanwhile, suitable cards can be moved to the 8 foundation piles, where each suit is built up from Ace to King, with two piles allocated for each suit.

The stock operates on a "Turn 1" basis, flipping one card at a time to the waste pile. Only the top card of the waste pile is playable; however, once the stock is exhausted, you can gather the waste pile to start a new round, with no limit on the number of redeals. This allows you to track card locations across turns and prepare the tableau before the cards you need appear.

Tableau Strategy Tips

  • Prioritize revealing face-down cards: A move that uncovers a new card is often more valuable than simply extending an existing sequence.
  • Leverage long columns: Columns with many cards often conceal crucial options, so aim to uncover them early.
  • Use the stock strategically: Before each redeal, check if the tableau has changed to avoid repeating the same board state.
  • Save Kings for the right moment: Empty slots are reserved for Kings, so avoid rushing to place them in sequences where they aren't strictly necessary.
  • Think twice before moving cards to the foundation: A card might still be useful on the tableau, especially if it serves as a connector within a sequence.
  • The ultimate goal is to move all 104 cards to the 8 foundation piles. With two copies of each card, you have more flexibility to maneuver the game, but the wide 9-column tableau and large number of face-down cards still require careful calculation and patience.

Basic Controls

  • Drag and drop: Move a card or a valid sequence of cards.
  • Double-click: Move a card to the foundation if the move is valid.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Double Klondike differ from standard Klondike?

The difference lies in the scale: the game uses two decks, 9 tableau columns, and 8 foundation piles, resulting in more layers of cards to manage during each game.

Why is revealing face-down cards important?

The more cards you reveal, the greater your chances of building new sequences.

Does running out of cards in the stock mean losing the game?

No. The waste pile can be gathered back into the stock and redealt indefinitely. What matters is whether the tableau still offers new moves.

Can an entire sequence of cards be moved to an empty column?

Yes, but the sequence must start with a King. This is a mandatory condition for utilizing a cleared tableau column.
